Most of us believe that continuing education is no longer an option for the modern workforce. Audiobooks and podcast continue to be an ideal tool for learning and staying abreast of current events.  Not to mention that the digital format is extremely convenient for those of us always on the go.

At Talmadge nearly every discussion always seems to center around things which occur during the interview process. This topic is no different.

Here is a great audiobook I just finished.  It was an interesting insight into the formation of the Federal Reserve Bank, and how inflation is the biggest tax ever imposed on the poor. This is a must listen for those focused on their financial future.

Start Your 2021 Job Search Off Right

Job Search Tips

Here are 7 New Year Resolutions To Start Your 2021 Job Search Off Right:

1. Clean up your social networks. A study of HR departments showed that nearly 80% of all recruiters will check to see what an applicant looks like online before an interview. They will likely search your name on Google and the most popular social networks to see what they can find. It’s important you know what you have out there so you are prepared for questions about what they may find. Check your privacy settings and lock down personal profiles that aren’t appropriate for work.

2. Use LinkedIn for more opportunities to be referred. People do business with who they know, like, and trust and having a robust LinkedIn network only makes your job search easier. Think about who you know that works in similar industries as you and see what companies they are connected to. Remove connections who don’t fit into the “know, like, trust” category as they aren’t going to help you.

3. Figure out what jobs are the best fit for you. If you don’t know what you want to do, you’ll likely take the next best offer and end up unhappy down the road. While you are out making connections on LinkedIn, keep in mind what you enjoy doing most and see if you know anyone in that industry who may be able to help. The clearer you are, the clearer others are about where to refer you.

4. Develop a target list of employers. Don’t search for jobs in reactive mode, only looking at what’s available. It’s important for you to be proactive about who you really want to work for so you can start looking for ways to get in the door. Make sure you are following the companies you find most desirable on LinkedIn and take note of who works there that your connections may also know.

5. Focus your efforts on networking, not applying for jobs online. Sending out mass quantities of resumes in response to job postings does not work. It may feel productive but it rarely captures the attention of hiring managers. Use your network to seek out those who are in the best position to introduce you and actively look for events where people from your target list of employers may be.

6. Help others with their job search. Just because you’re looking for a job doesn’t mean you can’t help others in the same situation. You don’t have to give away your best job leads but you can help them connect with someone you know who works at their target employer. As “they” say, “what goes around, comes around,” and paying forward to help others really does seem to payoff.

7. Remember your manners. Fewer than 5% of all candidates write a thank you letter after an interview and that small gesture helps you stand out from the crowd. Write a simple but impactful thank you letter…. with a real pen and paper, not typed! Handwrite the address on the envelope. Real people are in charge of hiring other real people so make sure your language isn’t canned or fake sounding. Believe it or not, a follow-up thank you letter has the power to make – or break a job deal. Focus your efforts on being a real human and you’ll find more doors swing open.

4 Tips To Building A Better Team

Hiring Strategy

As a hiring manager, your success is determined by those around you. Making great hires is the building block of Veteran Owned Small Business

“There’s only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving, and that’s your own self.” -Aldous Huxley

As a hiring manager, your success is determined by those around you. Making great hires is the building block to every team. Here are a few ways you can improve your hiring process and ultimately, your team. Talmadge is a Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) dedicated to providing Talent For Tomorrow.

1. Know what you want. Finding the right candidate for a position requires certainty, and is the only way to build high performing teams. Uncertainty can cost you time (which translates to money) and possibly the right person for the job. If you tend to switch up your qualification requirements or job description, you’re probably wasting time by talking to the wrong candidates, lengthening the hiring process. You could also be missing out on really great candidates who fit the bill but not your ever-changing job description. Working with a recruiter is a great way to iron out those details before you speak to candidates.

2. Lack of communication. Communication can be the Achilles heel of nearly any interaction. And when it comes to hiring, communication is key. Are you letting the candidate know exactly what you need from them? Perhaps you’d like them to take a personality assessment prior to their interview or come with copies of their resume and references. If they aren’t aware of your expectations, they’re likely to not meet them. A recruiter will handle these requests on your behalf. They’ll set expectations with the candidate so when they meet you, they’re ready to go.

3. Don’t wait. Are you taking your time to make a decision or waiting for the perfect candidate to walk through your door? In today’s job market, if you want the right candidate, you need to act quickly. When a resume rolls in, take a few minutes to review it and respond before you get distracted, even if it’s to let someone know that they aren’t a great fit. Making hiring your priority will keep you from making a bad hire and costing your company time and money.

4. Be interview ready. A good interviewer will be just as prepared as the interviewee. Put on a smile, do your research and be polite. Small gestures like walking someone to the elevator or looking them in the eye when they’re speaking, will make a big difference in the candidate’s perception. Remember, this candidate could be your future coworker, so act accordingly! Need some coaching? A recruiter is an experienced interviewer and can help prepare you for the interview.

Adding a recruiter to handle your hiring will help alleviate the stress of finding the right person for the job.
